Samia: We’re transforming TPDF through modern tech

Dar es Salaam. President Samia Suluhu Hassan on Sunday underscored the importance of technological advancement of Tanzania’s military.

She was speaking at Uhuru Stadium in Dar es Salaam during colourful celebrations held to mark the 60th anniversary of the Tanzania People Defence Force (TPDF).

“We are committed to strengthening our defence forces by incorporating cutting-edge technology in our equipment, strategies and battlefield tactics, ensuring that the TPDF remains agile, responsive and ready for any situation,” President Hassan, who is also the Commander-in-Chief of the defence and security forces,  said in her speech.

She emphasised the unique role of the TPDF as a people’s army, dedicated not to aggression, but Tanzania’s protection and the promotion of peace within the region.

“Our military will continue to maintain peace and we encourage our neighbours to do the same. Despite the peace we enjoy in our country, our military continues to strengthen itself in all areas in line with the principles of its formation,” she said.

The TPDF was established on September 1, 1964 following the disbandment of the Tanganyika Rifles (TR).

The first batch of 1,000 recruits – primarily from the Tanu and ASP youth leagues and the National Service – took the oath of service at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam, pledging allegiance to the then Commander-in-Chief of the defence and security forces, Mwalimu Nyerere.

Speaking on Sunday, the Chief of Defence Forces (CDF), General Jacob John Mkunda, highlighted the government’s continued support for the military, particularly in the procurement of various equipment, that enables the TPDF to fulfil its core responsibilities and ensure the safety of the nation’s borders.

General Mkunda also announced the release of a commemorative book chronicling TPDF’s 60-year journey, which was officially launched by President Hassan during the celebrations.

“We thank the government for its continued support and we request the government of the Sixth Phase under Her Excellency President Samia Suluhu Hassan to accept our gratitude on behalf of all previous governments since the army was established,” he said.

Defence minister Stergomena Tax praised President Hassan’s leadership.

“Under your leadership, the people’s army has grown from strength to strength and gained respect both within and outside our country.

“Its readiness to defend our freedom and constitution, protect our borders and participate in peacekeeping missions is well documented and this has brought our nation great honour,” Dr Tax said.
