Tanzanian police arrest ‘security officers’ involved in disturbing gang rape video

Dar es Salaam. Tanzanian authorities have confirmed the arrest of several individuals, believed to be security officers, in connection with a disturbing gang rape case that has sparked widespread outrage.

The Minister of Home Affairs, Hamad Masauni, confirmed the arrests on Tuesday after being contacted by Mwananchi Newspaper.

In a brief WhatsApp exchange, Masauni acknowledged the arrests with a terse “already” but declined to provide further details, citing an ongoing meeting.

The case first came to light when former Ubungo mayor Boniface Jacob exposed it on August 4 via X (formerly Twitter).

Jacob alleged that a young woman from Yombo Dovya in Dar es Salaam’s Temeke District was brutally raped and sodomized by five men who were reportedly acting under the orders of their superior.

The superior allegedly accused the victim of having an affair with her husband.

The viral video depicting the heinous act has drawn sharp criticism from human rights advocates, who have called on the government to take decisive action against the perpetrators.

The incident has ignited a public outcry, demanding justice and accountability for the abuse.

The case remains under investigation as authorities continue to respond to the public and media scrutiny.
