TMA warns of heavy rains in Dar es Salaam and five other regions

The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has urged residents of Dar es Salaam, Tanga, Mafia Isles, Pwani, Unguja, and Pemba Isles to be prepared for heavy rainfall in the coming days.

According to a five-day severe weather impact-based forecast released on October 27, 2023, the rains are expected to start on Sunday, October 29, and last until October 31.

TMA has warned that the rains could lead to floods and disruptions to economic activities. Residents are advised to take precautions, such as avoiding flooded areas and storing food and water in case of power outages.

In a previous report, TMA said that there are still indications of an El-Nino event occurring in most parts of the country, despite the change in weather patterns that has caused poor rainfall distribution in some regions.

TMA Weather Analyst Joyce Mwakata said on October 28, that the El-Nino event is still ongoing, as all weather systems and patterns are still showing the same.

“Despite the poor rainfall distribution, some regions have already recorded high rainfall, which has caused damage. Tanga, Unguja, and Pemba Isles have so far recorded 50 millimeters of rain,” she said.

In August this year, TMA said that most parts of the country would receive above-normal to normal rains during the season, which is expected to be influenced by El-Nino conditions, from the second week of October this year to January next year.
